The heart of Malibu's Eco-system is dysfunctional and a major source of pollution. The eco-system includes the Malibu Creek floodplain, wetland, lagoon and surfzone, and is one of the most studied areas in the world. Major scientific investigations and numerous video documentaries, linked here, explain in detail how ill-placed shopping centers, office buildings and parking lots that invite excessive traffic create pollution in a sensitive wildlife habitat area, making world famous Malibu Surfrider Beach one of the most polluted coastal tourist destinations in the Santa Monica Bay. Over 97% of California's wetlands have become dysfunctional with irresponsibly placed development. Wetlands serve as nature's waste treatment system, filtering out impurities from water sweeping off the land, before entering the ocean. When wetlands don't function properly, beaches downstream become polluted. EcoMalibu advocates California's wetland policy: "No net loss in the short-term and an increase in wetlands in the long-term." EcoMalibu.org serves to provide scientifically substantiated direction to solve the pollution problems in the heart of Malibu.

There are many issues we need to be concerned about when it comes to water pollution and Malibu highlights a sophisticated and wealthy community, allegedly sensitive to environmental issues, and yet it ignores the hazardous pollution of the creek and lagoon waters, as well as the obvious degradation of the creek and lagoon ecosystem, despite millions of dollars spent on numerous studies over the past two decades.
EcoMalibu is a California Non-profit and 501(c)(3) Tax Exempt organization. MISSION: Recover and restore the historic wetland in the heart of Malibu as per State of California policy, educate the general public about the wetland eco-system, promote and restore clean and safe water for the purpose of recreation and food sources at Malibu Surfrider Beach and Malibu Fishing Pier. VISION: To turn the heart of Malibu into a Marine Sanctuary, restore the historical wetlands holistically, create an educational center to teach the values of the wetland ecosystem and stop people from becoming sick because of swimming, surfing or catching fish at Malibu Beach. |
